Experts in education from around the world will bring different insights to the conference agenda – with the focus this year on the development of children's services, implementing the skills agenda and how the introduction of devolved government is impacting on the provision of education across the UK.


Steve Marshall
Director of the Department for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills at the Welsh Assembly Government. Formerly Chief Executive of the Department of Education and Children's Services in South Australia, where he earned a reputation as an innovator and reformer.
 
Professor David Hopkins
Chair in International Leadership supporting the International Networking for Educational Transformation (iNet) network. Formerly Chief Advisor on School Standards at the Department for Education and Skills, serving under three Education Secretaries.
   
Jane Hutt
Minister for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills at the Welsh Assembly Government. Before this appointment she was Director of Chwarae Teg (Fair Play) and the Welsh member on the New Opportunities Fund. Jane has been a member of the National Assembly for Wales since 1999 and was previously Minister for Health and Social Services and Business Minister.
   
Professor John Field
Deputy Principal at the University of Sterling. John previously worked at the University of Warwick, where he was Professor of Lifelong Learning. He has advised a number of government bodies in Britain and elsewhere, and was a member of the National Advisory Group on Continuing Education and Lifelong Learning.
   

The Honourable Lord Bill Morris of Handsworth

Former General Secretary, Transport and General Workers’ Union. Lord Morris is renowned for his achievements as one of the UK’s most prominent union leaders. Now retired from the Transport and General Workers’ union, he is involved in a range of activities. These include being a Non-executive Director of the Bank of England, Chair of the Morris Inquiry - a public study for the Metropolitan Police of their professional standards - Chancellor of Stafford University, England and the University of Technology, Jamaica. Plus, he is a member of the Commission for Integrated Transport, the Employment Appeals Tribunal and the England and Wales Cricket Board.

   
Fiona Millar, Journalist and Education and Parenting Specialist
Fiona is a journalist specialising in education and parenting issues. Fiona is currently the chair of the Family and Parenting Institute, vice-chair of Comprehensive Future and a governor of two schools in London. She also writes a regular column in ‘Education Guardian’, a contributor to LBC radio, “Comment is free”, the Guardian’s online comment page and regularly takes part in television and radio debates about education.
   
Jim Knight MP - Minister of State for Schools and 14-19 Learners
Jim was elected MP for Dorset South in June 2001. Between 2001 and 2003 he was a member of the Defence Select Committee. Jim was appointed Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to Rosie Winterton MP at the Department of Health in 2003, before going on to serve as PPS to the Department of Health’s Ministerial Team in 2004. Following the 2005 General Election, Jim was promoted to Minister for Rural Affairs, Landscape and Biodiversity and continued to work at DEFRA until he became Minister of State for Schools and Learners in May 2006.

Between 1997 and 2001, Jim was leader of the Labour Group, and Deputy Leader, of Mendip District Council. In 1999 he became Mayor of Frome. Jim, 41, was educated at Cambridge. Before entering Parliament, he managed a publishing company, based in the West Country, for 10 years. Prior to that, Jim Knight managed arts venues and worked for a small scale travelling theatre company. Jim Knight is married with two children.
